Removal

NOTICE: Suspension fasteners are critical parts that affect the performance of vital components and systems. Failure of these fasteners may result in major service expense. Use the same or equivalent parts if replacement is necessary. Do not use a replacement part of lesser quality or substitute design. Tighten fasteners as specified.

  1. Remove the wheel center cap.
  1. Loosen the wheel hub nut one complete turn.
  1. Remove the wheel and tire.
    Refer to: Wheel and Tire (204-04A Wheels and Tires, Removal and Installation).
  1. Remove the spring.
    Refer to: Spring (204-02B Rear Suspension - AWD, Removal and Installation).
  1. NOTICE: Install and tighten the new wheel hub nut to specification in a continuous rotation. Always install a new wheel hub nut after loosening or when not tightened to specification in a continuous rotation or damage to the components may occur.

    NOTE: This step requires the aid of another technician.

    While an assistant applies the brake, remove and discard the wheel hub nut.
  1. Remove the brake disc.
    Refer to: Brake Disc (206-04 Rear Disc Brake, Removal and Installation).
  1. Remove and discard the rear stabilizer link upper nut and position aside the rear stabilizer link.
    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)
  1. Using the special tool, press the halfshaft from the wheel bearing and hub. Support the halfshaft in a level position.
    Use Special Service Tool: 205-D070 (D93P-1175-B)  Remover, Front Wheel Hub.
  1. Remove the retainer and position aside the rear wheel speed sensor wiring and brake hose.
    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)
  1. Remove the bolt and position aside the rear wheel speed sensor.
    Torque: 80 lb.in (9 Nm)
  1. NOTICE: Tighten the suspension bushing fasteners with the suspension loaded or with the weight of the vehicle resting on the wheels and tires, otherwise incorrect clamp load and bushing damage may occur.

    NOTICE: Make sure that the ball joint ball does not rotate.

    NOTICE: Use care when installing the tie rod separator or damage to the outer tie-rod end boot may occur.

    NOTICE: Use care when releasing the upper arm and wheel knuckle into the resting position or damage to the ball joint seal may occur.

    Remove and discard the upper arm to wheel knuckle nut.
    Use the General Equipment: Tie Rod End Remover
    Torque:
      Stage 1:  177 lb.in (20 Nm)
      Stage 2:  90°
  1. NOTICE: Tighten the suspension bushing fasteners with the suspension loaded or with the weight of the vehicle resting on the wheels and tires, otherwise incorrect clamp load and bushing damage may occur.

    NOTICE: Do not use a prying device or separator fork between the ball joint and the wheel knuckle. Damage to the ball joint or ball joint seal may result. Only use the pry bar by inserting it into the lower arm body opening.

    NOTICE: Use care when releasing the lower arm and wheel knuckle into the resting position or damage to the ball joint seal may occur.

    NOTICE: Make sure that the ball joint ball does not rotate.

    Remove and discard the lower arm to wheel knuckle nut.
    Torque:
      Stage 1:  177 lb.in (20 Nm)
      Stage 2:  90°
  1. NOTE: This step requires the aid of another technician.


    1. Remove and discard the rear shock absorber lower nut and bolt.
      Torque: 76 lb.ft (103 Nm)
    1. Remove the wheel knuckle mounting retainers and remove the wheel knuckle.
      Torque:
        Stage 1:  177 lb.in (20 Nm)
        Stage 2:  92 lb.ft (125 Nm)
  1. NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.

    Remove the rear wheel bearing and wheel hub.
    Refer to: Wheel Bearing and Wheel Hub - Vehicles With: Rear Disc Brakes (204-02B Rear Suspension - AWD, Removal and Installation).

Installation

NOTICE: Tighten the suspension bushing fasteners with the suspension loaded or with the weight of the vehicle resting on the wheels and tires, otherwise incorrect clamp load and bushing damage may occur.

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  1. Pull the halfshaft into the hub.
    Use Special Service Tool: 204-161 (T97P-1175-A)  Installer, Halfshaft.
  1. Check and if necessary adjust the parking brake cable.
    Refer to: Parking Brake Cable Adjustment - Vehicles With: Rear Disc Brakes (206-05 Parking Brake and Actuation, General Procedures).
  1. NOTICE: Do not tighten the wheel hub nut with the vehicle on the ground. The nut must be tightened to specification before the vehicle is lowered onto the wheels. Wheel bearing damage will occur if the wheel bearing is loaded with the weight of the vehicle applied.

    NOTICE: Install and tighten the new wheel hub nut to specification in a continuous rotation. Always install a new wheel hub nut after loosening or when not tightened to specification in a continuous rotation or damage to the components may occur.

    NOTE: This step requires the aid of another technician.

    While an assistant applies the brake to keep the halfshaft from rotating, tighten the wheel hub nut.
    Torque: 188 lb.ft (255 Nm)
  1. Check and if necessary adjust rear toe.
    Refer to: Rear Toe Adjustment - AWD (204-00 Suspension System - General Information, General Procedures).

    Remove the wheel and tire.

    Remove the brake flexible hose bracket bolt.
    Disconnect the brake tube fitting and remove the brake hose clip.
    Loosen the brake hose fitting and remove the brake flexible hose.
