Electric Booster Heater Operation

When the HVAC controls are switched to the highest heat setting, the HVAC control module sends voltage to energize the two electric booster heater relays.

The electric booster heater has no integrated electronics. The HVAC control module contains the software to activate the electric booster heater relays depending on the following parameters:

  • Engine coolant temperature is below 64°C (147°F)
  • Ambient air temperature is below 8°C (46°F)
  • Sufficient generator capacity is available

The electric booster heater is deactivated when an engine coolant temperature of 66°C (150°F) or an ambient air temperature of 10°C (50°F) is exceeded.

The vehicle electrical system prioritizes other electrical loads over the electric booster heater and therefore may not supply enough electrical power to the electric booster heater.

Component Description

Electric Booster Heater

The electric booster heater is composed of 2 separate PTC elements. The PTC elements can be activated or deactivated individually or together by the HVAC control module.

There are three output stages available (with vehicle electrical system in optimal conditions):

  • Relay 1 energized, approximate 317W ± 10%
  • Relay 2 energized, approximate 633W ± 10%
  • Relays 1 and 2 energized, approximate 950W ± 10%
